Madeley Pitmounds Local Nature Reserve is publicly accessible open space with significant nature conservation, historical and social value that provide an outstanding and distinctive natural asset
The immediate surroundings comprise urban mosaic with numerous areas of local green space and woodland which are linked by a substantial Rights of Way network.
All of the component sites comprise similar habitats; predominantly mixed and broadleaf woodlands, which have grown over old pitmounds. The pitmounds are important legacies of the significant contribution the Madeley area made to the nation’s industrial past and to the heritage of Telford and Ironbridge. All sites are either within or near the boundary of the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site which presents a fascinating summary of industrial development and impact. The sites are also locally important amenity and recreational resources providing opportunities for environmental education and enjoyment of nature and outdoor green space in an urban context.
The adoption of the site as a Local Nature Reserve has raised local awareness and enjoyment of the biodiversity and cultural heritage resources that are available, as well as providing an increased level of protection to ensure the preservation of the natural features for their special interest in a predominantly urbanised area.
